Most transportation companies would like for you to have a hazard endorsement on your CDL license. Besides it could pay more for hauling these types of loads. Applying for your Hazardous Material Endorsement (HME) is not to hard to do. First you have to go online to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website and register by filling the online application. There is an $86.50 fee which includes submitting your fingerprints at one of the hazmat enrollment centers located in your state. They have a list on the website to the locations for your area. Some of the locations may require you to make an appointment before you go to get your fingerprints, while others are usually open during their normal business hours.
Once you find a location it is a really simple process. They just asked for my CDL license and waited a few minutes because I was the only one there. They are very thorough in your fingerprinting. They place your right four fingers and then your right thumb a scanner. You can see the prints as they are scanned on a monitor in front of you. Then they place each individual right finger and thumb on the scanner. They press and rotate each one from far right to left to make sure they got every line on each finger. They repeat the same process with your left hand. They don't miss a single line so you better be who you say you are. In about (2) weeks you should receive a letter from the Transportation Security Administration saying whether you are approved or not. If approved you can take the letter to your state commercial drivers license facility so you can take the hazmat exam. If you are ambitious, at the same time you take the hazmat exam you could also take the tanks and doubles exams. These endorsements would be an even bigger plus to potential employers. Good luck!
